LEARNING ABOUT LEARNING
17 July 2007, London

Librarians and information professionals across all sectors spend time helping both users and colleagues to exploit resources and to find and use information more effectively. However, it is not easy for people to adopt new strategies. These sorts of changes cannot simply be handed over to them. So how do people learn how to do new things or to alter what they already do?

Understanding learning may not be a traditional part of librarians' knowledge, but it can be crucial to success when advising or working with users and colleagues. This one-day course explores how people learn, and is designed to give library and information staff knowledge about learning theory that should underpin their work.

BENEFITS OF ATTENDING
The day will explore some important elements of learning that are most relevant to librarians' work and that are likely to have the most impact on practice.

During the course attendees will be encouraged to build a learning framework that they can use to analyse their current practice and to help them enhance it.

BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
· considered what constitutes learning
· explored the factors that influence the effectiveness of learning
· discussed some models of learning and their influence on how people 'teach'
· examined some aspects of learning that are fundamental to engaging people in the learning process
· considered how to build an understanding of learning into their work

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
Librarians and information professionals who wish to understand more about how people learn in order to base their practice on sound learning principles.

COURSE LEADER: SHARON MARKLESS
